MBRT Urges Swift Bipartisan Congressional Action to Reform Healthcare Now
- Bold action needed to pool resources, reduce cost, create health insurance exchanges and public options providing choice and affordability
- Keep America competitive and a leader in world technology and innovation
Washington, D.C. – Over four million minority businesses which employ millions of Americans are at risk facing sky rocketing healthcare costs and poor and sometimes no health plan choices. Many businesses are facing cut backs and layoffs in our struggling economy while the basic right to proper healthcare coverage has now become a privilege for those who can afford it. Costs are rising so fast that business owners are simply dropping coverage for employees. Premiums for employers have grown 120% since 1999. Moreover, over half of workers in minority firms that do not offer health benefits are uninsured. This impacts minority communities disproportionately because the lowest paid workers are least able to afford heath insurance. The net result is lower wage growth, reductions in hiring, capital outlay, product development and manufacturing which suppresses job creation and stifles economic growth. America’s standard of living and quality of life is at grave risk if we do nothing to reform our healthcare system.
It is time for all American’s to stand up and ask your representatives in Congress to put aside political posturing for the greater common good and pass meaningful healthcare legislation for future generations of American’s. “Access to affordable and quality healthcare should be a basic right of every American”, said Roger A. Campos, President & CEO. “Minority businesses should be allowed tax credits and access to affordable coverage at negotiated bulk rates through purchasing pools”.
“American’s will have the choice of public or private plans to foster competition among insurers, and the ability to compare features and control costs”, said Janice Bryant Howroyd, MBRT Chairman and CEO, Act-1 Group located in Torrance, CA. “We must, as a nation, place our greatest resource-people-above Politics”.
